Study paths
A study path is a suggested order of work with a stated destination. Each one names what you should be able to do at the end, estimates how much time it needs, points to the specific guides and worksheets that support it, and sets out the stops in a sensible sequence. Nothing here is enforced. If a stop is already comfortable, skip it.
Choosing a path
Learners tend to arrive with one of three problems. The first is method: the work gets done, but slowly and without much sticking. The second is output: the reading goes in, but the essay or report will not come out. The third is volume: there is more to do than the week can hold, and each week starts a little further behind.
Path 01 addresses method, paths 02 and 03 address output, and path 05 addresses volume. Paths 04 and 06 are narrower and assume you already have a working routine. If none of that describes your situation, write to the enquiry desk and describe it in a paragraph; we will point you at the right shelf rather than a whole path.

01 · Foundations of independent study
Eight weeks · about three hours a week · no prior method required
The path most learners should start with. It replaces the default study routine — read, highlight, re-read, panic — with something deliberate. Nothing in it is difficult; the difficulty is doing it for eight weeks while the old habits argue with you.
Objectives
By the end you should be able to:
- Estimate how long a piece of study work will take, within about twenty per cent.
- Build a repeating weekly timetable and adjust it after a disrupted week without abandoning it.
- Take structured notes from a reading or a lecture in a form that supports later review.
- Test yourself on material without looking at it, and interpret what the gaps mean.
- Schedule reviews at expanding intervals rather than studying whatever feels most urgent.
- Assess your own method honestly at the end of a term and change one thing.
Estimated study time
Twenty-four hours in total: roughly ninety minutes of reading and ninety minutes of applied work each week. The applied half is not optional — this path does very little for people who only read it.

Suggested order
Audit the week you actually have
Log every study session for seven days as it happens. Do not tidy the log. Compare it with the week you thought you were having.
Draw a weekly shape
Fixed commitments first, then study blocks, then one unassigned block for overflow. Aim for a timetable you could repeat for ten weeks, not an ideal one.
Adopt one note structure
Cornell notes, used for everything, for four weeks. Resist redesigning the page. The value is in the cue column and the summary, which is where review actually happens.
Replace re-reading with retrieval
Blank-page recall at the end of every session. Compare against the notes, mark the gaps, and study only the gaps.
Put reviews on the calendar
Every topic gets three dates: plus two days, plus one week, plus three weeks. Written down, not remembered.
Stress-test the system
Deliberately miss a planned session and practise recovering the schedule. Every real term includes bad weeks; the question is whether the plan survives them.
Review the method, change one thing
What held, what stopped, what single change would help most. Write the answers down; the record is worth more next term than your memory of it.
02 · Academic writing
Ten weeks · about four hours a week · works best alongside a real assignment
This path treats writing as a sequence of decisions rather than a talent. It is built to run in parallel with a piece of work you have been set, because the exercises ask you to apply each stage to your own draft. Doing it in the abstract is possible but noticeably less useful.
Objectives
- Turn a topic into a contestable thesis that a reasonable reader could disagree with.
- Plan a structure in which each section earns its place in the argument.
- Write paragraphs that make a claim, support it, and connect it to the one before.
- Integrate quotation, paraphrase and summary without losing your own voice.
- Cite accurately in APA, MLA or Chicago, and understand why the conventions differ.
- Revise structurally before revising sentences, and proofread as a separate pass.
Estimated study time
Forty hours across ten weeks. Roughly one third reading, two thirds writing and revising. Weeks 6 to 8 are the heaviest.

Suggested order
Read the question as an instruction
Identify the task verb, the scope and the unstated criteria. Most low marks are awarded to competent answers to a slightly different question.
Draft a working thesis
One sentence, arguable, specific. Expect to rewrite it after the reading; a thesis that survives untouched usually was not saying much.
Plan the argument, not the topics
Each section should answer “and therefore?” from the one before. If a section could be moved without loss, it is a topic, not a step.
Build paragraphs
Claim, evidence, interpretation, link. Practise on three paragraphs of your own draft and three from a published article.
Handle sources
Decide deliberately between quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing. Quote when the wording itself is the evidence; otherwise put it in your own words.
Cite consistently
Learn one style properly rather than three approximately. Build the reference list as you write, not afterwards.
Revise in three passes
Structure, then paragraphs, then sentences. Leave at least forty-eight hours before the final proofread so you read what is on the page rather than what you meant.
03 · Research skills
Nine weeks · about three and a half hours a week · needs access to a library catalogue
Designed for a first substantial research project: an extended essay, an undergraduate dissertation, or a workplace review of evidence. It covers finding material, judging it, recording it, and keeping the whole thing navigable months later.
Objectives
- Narrow a broad interest into a researchable question with a defensible scope.
- Search databases with controlled vocabulary and Boolean operators rather than guesswork.
- Judge a source on funding, method, sample and stated limitations, not on where it appeared.
- Keep a research record that a stranger — including future you — could follow.
- Recognize the difference between a literature summary and a literature review.
- Apply basic research ethics, including honest reporting of what you did not find.
Estimated study time
Thirty-two hours, weighted towards the middle weeks. Searching well is slow at first and then unexpectedly quick.

Suggested order
Map the territory
Two weeks of unstructured reading to find out what the conversation is about before you decide what to say in it.
Write the question three ways
Broad, narrow, and impossibly narrow. The workable version is usually closer to the third than you expect.
Search systematically
Record the databases, terms and filters you used. A search you cannot reproduce is an anecdote.
Screen and evaluate
Title, then abstract, then method. Most sources are excluded at the abstract; be ruthless and note why.
Build the record
One entry per source: citation, the question it answers, the method, the limitation, and your own one-line verdict.
Synthesize rather than list
Group sources by what they disagree about. A literature review organized by author is a bibliography with paragraphs.
04 · Exam preparation
Six weeks · about five hours a week · start when the date is known
A revision path built backwards from the exam date. It assumes the material has already been covered once; this is about making it retrievable under pressure, not learning it for the first time.
Objectives
- Convert a syllabus into a checklist of testable outcomes with confidence ratings.
- Build a revision calendar with expanding review intervals and deliberate spare capacity.
- Practise under conditions resembling the assessment, including its time limits.
- Mark your own work against the criteria the examiner will use.
- Manage the final ten days without either coasting or cramming.
Estimated study time
Thirty hours across six weeks. The path deliberately reduces new content in the last ten days and increases full-condition practice.

Suggested order
Turn the syllabus into a checklist
Every topic becomes a statement beginning “I can…”. Rate each one from one to five. The list is the plan.
Build the calendar backwards
Place the exam, then the final review, then first passes over weak topics. Leave one empty day a week; you will need it.
First pass on the weakest third
Start where confidence is lowest, not where the material is most pleasant. Retrieval, not re-reading.
Practise under conditions
Full timing, no notes, no pauses. Then mark it against the published criteria before looking at anyone’s answer.
Re-rate and target
Update the confidence checklist using actual performance rather than feeling. The two often disagree, and the checklist should follow the marks.
Taper
Short retrieval sessions, sleep protected, logistics settled two days ahead. New material in the last seventy-two hours rarely pays for the anxiety it costs.
05 · Time management
Five weeks · about two hours a week · designed for people who are already short of time
The shortest path, on purpose. It is written for learners balancing study with employment, caring responsibilities or both, and it assumes you cannot simply create more hours. The goal is fewer wasted hours and less time spent deciding.
Objectives
- Measure your real available study time rather than your intended study time.
- Estimate task duration and correct your estimates using recorded evidence.
- Batch similar work and protect one deep block a week from interruption.
- Decide what not to do, explicitly, and accept the consequence.
- Recover a schedule after disruption without restarting the whole system.
Estimated study time
Ten hours in total, most of it spent recording and reviewing rather than reading.

Suggested order
Audit
Seven days of honest logging. No changes yet — changing behaviour while measuring it spoils the measurement.
Estimate and compare
Before each task, predict the minutes. Afterwards, record the actual. Two weeks of this cures most planning optimism.
Protect one block
Ninety minutes a week, same slot, no messages, no email, door shut where possible. One reliable block outperforms five interrupted ones.
Decide what to drop
Write the list of things you are choosing not to do this term. Unmade decisions consume attention exactly like unfinished tasks.
Install the weekly review
Same time each week, fixed agenda, thirty to forty minutes. This is the stop that keeps the other four alive.
06 · Critical thinking
Seven weeks · about three hours a week · assumes confident academic reading
Aimed at upper-year undergraduates, graduate students and adult learners who want to read arguments as structures rather than as opinions to agree or disagree with. Every stop includes practice extracts with annotated answers.
Objectives
- Identify the conclusion of an argument and the reasons offered for it.
- Surface unstated assumptions and test whether they hold.
- Distinguish correlation from causation in reported research and in journalism.
- Read charts and statistics for what they omit as well as what they show.
- Name the common informal fallacies and, more usefully, explain what has gone wrong.
- Write a critique that engages with the strongest version of a position.
Estimated study time
Twenty-one hours, evenly distributed. Roughly half is spent on the practice extracts.

Suggested order
Find the conclusion
Harder than it sounds; in academic prose the conclusion often arrives before the reasons, or twice, or in a footnote.
Map the reasons
Diagram which reasons support the conclusion independently and which only work together. Independent support is much stronger.
Surface the assumptions
Ask what would have to be true for the reasons to support the conclusion. That is usually where the disagreement actually lives.
Test the evidence
Sample size, comparison group, measurement, and who counted. A striking result with no comparison group is a story.
Read the numbers
Axes, baselines, denominators, and relative versus absolute change. Most misleading charts are technically accurate.
Name the failures
Fallacies as diagnosis rather than as accusation. The useful output is a sentence explaining what went wrong, not a Latin label.
Write a fair critique
State the position in a form its holder would accept, then object. Anything else is arguing with a version you built yourself.
Combining paths
Running two full paths at once is usually a mistake — the weekly hours add up faster than motivation does. Two combinations do work well, because the second path mostly reinforces the first:
- Foundations (01) then Exam preparation (04)
- The natural sequence for a first-year learner with exams in the winter term. Finish the foundations path in October, begin the exam path six weeks before the assessment. Total commitment across the term is about fifty-four hours.
- Research skills (03) alongside Academic writing (02)
- Recommended for dissertation work, but staggered: run the first five stops of the research path before starting the writing path, then interleave. Attempting both from week one produces a lot of notes and no draft.
- Time management (05) before anything else
- If the honest answer to “when would you do this?” is “I do not know”, start here. Five weeks and ten hours, and it makes every other path realistic.
A note on pace
The week numbers are guidance, not a schedule you are failing. Learners who take twelve weeks over the eight-week foundations path finish it far more often than learners who try to compress it into three. If you fall behind, move the remaining stops forward rather than skipping them.
