Accessibility statement
Examit is committed to making its collection usable by everyone, including people using screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, magnification, speech input or reduced-motion settings. This page states what we aim for, what we have built, what still does not work, and how to get any material in a different format at no cost.
Our commitment
Study material that cannot be read by the person who needs it is not a resource, it is a gesture. Accessibility is therefore treated here as part of publishing rather than as a compliance exercise appended to it: no guide is published until it has passed an accessibility check, and the check is part of the editorial process described in our editorial standards.
We also try to be honest. The section on known limitations below lists things that currently do not work well. We would rather publish that list than claim a conformance level we have not fully reached.
The standard we work to
We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the website and all printable materials. We also work within the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and its Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation, which applies to organizations operating in Ontario.
Our assessment as of the May 2026 audit is that the site substantially conforms to WCAG 2.1 Level AA, with the exceptions listed below. “Substantially” is doing real work in that sentence: it means we have found and fixed everything our testing identified, and that we assume our testing has not found everything.
What we have built
- Semantic structure. Real headings in a logical order, landmark regions, lists marked up as lists, and tables with proper header cells and captions.
- Keyboard operation. Every control, filter, accordion, search field and link can be reached and operated from the keyboard alone, in a sensible order. The search results list supports arrow-key navigation and closes on Escape.
- Visible focus. A high-contrast focus indicator appears on every interactive element. We have not removed browser focus styling anywhere.
- Skip link. A skip-to-content link is the first item on every page.
- Text alternatives. Every diagram carries a title and a description conveying the same information as the image. Decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology.
- Colour contrast. Body text meets or exceeds a 4.5:1 ratio against its background in both the light and dark themes; large text and interface components meet 3:1. Colour is never the only means of conveying information.
- Resizable text. Content reflows without loss of function at 200% zoom and at 320 CSS pixels of width.
- Reduced motion. Transitions and smooth scrolling are disabled automatically when your system requests reduced motion.
- Forms. Every field has a visible, associated label; error messages are announced and describe what to do rather than only what is wrong.
- Status messages. Filter results and form outcomes are announced to screen readers without moving focus unexpectedly.
- No traps. No pop-ups, no interstitials, no auto-playing media, no time limits, no content that moves or flashes.
Controls on every page
At the top right of every page you will find:
- Text size
- Three settings. The change applies to everything on the page proportionally, including headings, tables and diagram labels, because the whole layout is built in relative units. Your browser’s own zoom works as well and can be combined with this.
- Colour theme
- Light and dark. Both meet the contrast requirements above. If you have not chosen, the site follows your operating system setting.
Both choices are stored in your own browser and never transmitted — see the cookie policy. If your browser blocks storage, the controls still work for the current visit.
Printable materials
Every worksheet, template and reference sheet was rebuilt in April 2026 as a tagged accessible PDF with a defined reading order, tagged headings, table header associations, alternative text on diagrams, and a real text layer on everything previously supplied as an image.
Print layouts are designed for legibility rather than appearance: generous line spacing, no text over background images, sufficient contrast in greyscale, and enough space to write in. Everything prints legibly in black and white.
Known limitations
These are the issues we are aware of and have not yet resolved. Each carries our current expectation for when it will be.

Requesting an alternative format
Any item in the collection can be supplied in a different format at no cost. We currently provide:
- Large print (18pt or larger, specify your preference)
- Plain text with no formatting
- Tagged accessible PDF
- Word processor format for editing or reflowing
- High-contrast print layout
- Long text descriptions of any diagram

We do not ask for documentation
You do not need to explain why you need a format, and we will not ask for evidence of a disability. If you tell us a format would be more useful to you, that is sufficient.
How we test
Three layers, and the third is the one that finds the real problems.
- Automated checks on every page before publication, covering contrast, heading order, form labelling and alternative text. These catch perhaps a third of the issues that matter.
- Manual review by the accessibility lead: keyboard-only navigation of the whole page, zoom to 200% and 400%, greyscale rendering, and reading the page with the stylesheet disabled.
- Testing with people. A volunteer panel works through the collection annually using NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver, along with magnification and speech-input users. Their reports drive the priority order of the limitations table above.
The most recent full audit was completed on 12 May 2026. Our thanks to the volunteer testers, whose willingness to say plainly that something did not work has improved this site more than any automated tool.
Feedback
If you encounter something on this site that you cannot use, please tell us. Reports of specific barriers are the most useful thing we receive, and we would much rather fix a problem than have someone quietly go elsewhere.
